Outdoor Reading Nook

I created the coziest reading corner in my hobby room a couple months back, and with summer’s arrival, an outdoor reading nook was calling my name.

For as long as I could remember, reading has been my favorite past time. Curling up into a cozy spot with a good book is always so relaxing to me. You can read in all sorts of places – the couch, the beach, a coffee shop, etc. – but nothing beats a reading nook. I created the coziest reading corner in my hobby room a couple months back, and with summer’s arrival, an outdoor reading nook was calling my name. Reading in nature is one of the best ways to have a comfortable and inspiring reading experience, so I couldn’t wait to get started on this project. I’m dedicating this post to talk about outdoor reading nooks and how to make your very own.

What Is An Outdoor Reading Nook

An outdoor reading spot can look like many different things. Maybe it’s your favorite spot on the beach, a park bench, or your very own reading corner at home! It could be on your porch, balcony, patio, yard, etc. Any outdoor space can be a cozy, special spot to boost your reading habits. If you don’t have your own outdoor space to create a reading nook, don’t be afraid to find one in nature, such as your local park.

What Are The Benefits Of Reading Outdoors

I love to be outside and I use any excuse I can to enjoy nature! Luckily for me, southern California is typically pretty comfortable weather all year long, and when summer hits I especially crave being outdoors. Reading is one of my favorite hobbies and you can do it anywhere! I love taking advantage of this and taking a good book outdoors.

Reduce Stress And Anxiety

Reading in natural settings has such a calming effect on me. The sights sounds and smells, especially in the spring and summer are all so beautiful. It’s been scientifically proven that spending time outdoors lowers cortisol levels and promotes relaxation! Not to mention sunlight is a serotonin booster. It’s basically a full sensory experience.

Improves Sleep Quality

Exposure to natural light, especially in the morning, can actually regulate your circadian rhythm! Who knew spending time in nature resulted in sleeping better at night?

Increases Creativity

Nature, fresh air, and natural light are all linked to boost creativity, increases mental clarity, and improves focus and concentration.

Intaking Vitamin D

It’s so important to get a lot of vitamin D because it’s essential for mood regulation, immune function and bone health. Being exposed to the sun while reading is such an easy way to get your vitamin D intake.

How To Make An Outdoor Reading Nook

Step 1: Choose Location And Clean Space

The area could be a porch, patio, balcony, yard, etc. You don’t need a large space, but if you do have a big space, maybe choose your reading area based on your preference of what time of day the light is shining on the space.

Step 2: Plan The Reading Nook

Begin mapping out what you’d like to have in your reading nook. If you can use stuff you already have, it’s even easier to do! But if you have to shop, there’s so many affordable ideas on Walmart and Amazon!

Set Up Furniture

If you’re using a rug, lay that out first, and then build and arrange your furniture. I bought all of my furniture from Walmart!

Decorate Area

I added plants, a candle, and books to my corner and it brought so much life to the space. The decorations are all from Walmart and found plants at Trader Joe’s – some already in planters. I also added a blanket and pillow from Walmart onto the reading chair itself, along with larger plants on either side of the reading corner.
